Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD): This is the measurment of the distance between oposing bolt holes. The measurement is made from the center of one hole to the center of the hole across from it (i.e. not the one next to it). Fortunately most chainrings have their BCD measurment stamped on them, so it is rare that you will actually have to measure one. Just replace the ring with one with the same BCD. On a crank with three chainrings (a.k.a. a triple) the smallest chainring will have a lower BCD than the others. Here are some common combinations:
MTB 4-bolt: 104/64
MTB compact: 94/58
MTB Standard: 110/74
Road Standard: 130/74
These are for referance only, always check your actual ring or crank to determine the BCD you need.
